FIRST POST!

FIRST POST! I would love to take credit for the brilliant entry title, but unfortunately it was all Spams idea. Thanks, Spam. Unfortunately, in the mean time, Ive forgotten how to blog. So in true first post style.. there will be no extra content to this post. Kidding, of course. Ive been reading your comments on Stus post and was going to write back but then realized this might be better, and Id just like to say its been incredibly inspiring to read everything you have to say about Marilee Jones, the application process in general, and moving forward. All of your comments are so genuine and thoughtful, and it really makes a difference to hear what you have to say. Im so proud (sniff).. the 11s are all grown up! All jokes aside you guys really are rad. We of all people understand the power of your words, and your encouraging comments have been very helpful during this difficult time. Meanwhile, back at MIT, life has been blowing by at full pace. I have 16 more days until Im no longer a freshman, which entails five exams, three papers, and a presentation, as well as two concerts (ARCADE FIRE and ANDREW BIRD.. if youre not coming to Boston for the world-reknowned universities or beautiful city skylines, come for the incredible music scene) and Randall Munroe of xkcd! It also probably entails me falling over at one point until I realize I only have x days left, and crawl back to my desk to attack aromatic molecules once again. Which reminds me I officially declared Course 5 (chemistry), because of my unnatural (dare I say.. inorganic?) love of organic chemistry! Everythings been rushing by so quickly that I completely forgot to write about my CPW which was awesome fun. Being silly during Next Acts production of Beauty and the Beast, catching random rock-paper-scissor tournaments, assaulting people to get them interested in working for MITs ambulance HEY! RYAN! YOU WANT TO RIDE AN AMBULANCE?! YEAH, I KNOW YOU DO! Um I dont know you.) good times were had by all. Meet the Bloggers, of course, was a huge success, even if I was late sorry guys! MIT time runs five minutes behind.. I got to meet some of my favorite commenters, and non-commenters (that means you, Jenny A.), and it was really cool to finally get to meet you guys. Minus that slight awkwardness factor. Sam and I got around that by evolving the Thanks-For-Reading-My-Blog Head Tilt. Observe: Works every time. Also, I dont know if you knew this, but I never got to go to my CPW. And this year, I actually had class during some of the crazy events and so I never got to eat liquid nitrogen ice cream. This was remedied last Tuesday at ESG, when the Kitchen Chemistry seminar made all different flavors not just vanilla and strawberry, but also brownie cookie dough and raspberry white chocolate, mango and chocolate chip cookie dough. My life changed forever that day. I have a whole file of your questions that Ill be answering next entry, but please keep them coming if you want your answer in next entry, or just email me (iamjkim at mit dot edu). Now, for the real test wholl get first post?

A Cautionary Tale of Application Cliches

‘Twas the night before deadlines, and all through the world, Our consultants sat cramming, coffee brewing, brows furrowed; Though the essays were written with effort and care, There were still a few things that were cause for despair! The clichà ©s! Oh, forsake! Terrible, were they – That all our consultants could think was â€Å"oy vey!† The bloopers! The follies! The overused phrases – Oh, what would the adcom say? Imagine the look on their faces! So we cleaned and we scrubbed and we checked all the words; We made sure that nothing sounded clichà ©d or absurd. Then swift as a mouse looking for plum pie crumbs, We sent those essays back with the click of our thumbs. And oh, the good cheer, and ah, the delight, To see a perfect essay with no clichà ©s in sight! Then with boundless cheer and some joy and some tears; The applicants submitted their unique, shining essays! Phew – they were in the clear! Moral of the story: phrases and idioms come and go in waves. While it’s okay to use some popular phrasing, you want to make sure that your essay is original and not chock-full of clichà ©s. Take your clichà ©s to the next level The first time someone used â€Å"take it to the next level† in their essay, the reader probably stopped and thought – wow, that’s a great way to put it. They probably thought the same thing the second and third and even tenth time they heard it. But the hundredth time? The thousandth? It’s just not as impressive. In fact, after original phrases get used to death, they become boring, even silly, and lose their meaning. We recently polled Accepted’s consultants and asked: â€Å"What are the most abused and misused clichà ©s used by applicants?† When we dug out from under the flood of responses, we found the following to be the ultimate winners/losers: Take it to the next level Lend a helping hand Been there for me Want to give back Outside my comfort zone Making a difference Disruptive-anything Global-anything Diverse-anything Onboarding Thinking outside the box Synergy Touch base Circle back Hit the ground running Rolling up my sleeves Finding my path/journey Made me the man/woman I am today When writing your essays, try to move outside your comfort zone and take your writing to the next level. You want to really make a difference and get on board with this global thinking and diverse wordification. Yeah, we thought that would help make our point. Obama s Tenure As President Of The United States

Barrack Obama’s tenure as President of the United States is coming to a close and voters should understand how to gather reliable information on new candidates, such as Jeb Bush. Even though paying attention to all four major types of media platforms; digital, legacy, a candidates’ own media, and social media, creates a sound informative opinion on Republican Presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, digital media provides voters with the most holistic view. The benefits of digital media, throughout the week of September 15th through the 22nd, created an opportunity to construct a different point of view on Bush and what he stands for. As a Syracuse University student, I have the privilege of having The New York Times waiting for me in the lobby of my dorm every morning. After the Republican debate aired on CNN, I eagerly grabbed the Times to see what it had to say about Bush’s tax plan. However, after reading, the only information regarding Bush’s stance on anything was a possible Secret Service name, â€Å"Eveready - it’s very high energy.†(1) Even though most legacy media have a digital compliment, the actual paper can only give a certain amount of information in a day and it shouldn t be wasted on the trivial matters of the presidential campaign. In order to discuss the Scottish immigration you must understand why they immigrated, what type of prejudice they faced, and what role the Scots now have in today’s America. Though the Scots did not have the influx of people immigrating as the Irish, Italian, or English they had a major influence on the development of America. This would include discriminating against them in jobs, whether that being not hiring because of color, or not promoting for the same reason. For the most part the Scottish did real well for themselves once they were in America. A fair went on to have children who became presidents; Andrew Jackson was one of those children. David Henry Ms. Moraites/Ms. Powell ELA 10 15 April 2015 Same-Sex Marriage In today’s world the idea of same-sex marriage for same-sex couples has been largely denied by many states. A same-sex couple is when two individuals of the same sex either man or woman are involved in a relationship. However they are unable to make it official since marriage is one of many rights and opportunities denied to them in society. Same-sex couples should be granted the same rights and opportunities as heterosexual couples in society. In the bible it highlights the importance of man/woman relations, and any physical relationship that cannot result in reproduction is considered unnatural. In addition, this isn’t just anchored to one city, state, or country but is a global occurrence. The overwhelming support from all of the world against the idea of same-sex unions has resulted in the denial of rights to homosexuals and the discrimination that comes with the denial of those rights. This tradition of heterosexual marriage that has been held for many centuries between a man and woman, and with the homosexual community trying to change this, its changing a way of life that has aided in the reproduction of most species. Some who are against same-sex marriage feel like homosexuality is anti-god and the breeding ground for an unholy way of life. On the other hand, someone with an opposing view would argue that even though this tradition is considered sacred, time, environment, and society changes things around us. An argument could state â€Å"isn’t god as a being said to love all, so why fight against the rights of homosexuals just because their way of life differs from those who are heterosexual.
